By the late 1890s, hockey had spread from Canada down into the USA. The first hockey game was played between Yale and Hopkins University in 1893. In 1894, the first artificial ice rink was build in Maryland. In 1896, the first hockey league was created in America, the US Amateur Hockey League, later to join the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1904. The International Ice Hockey Federation only lasted three seasons, but was the first professional league between Canada and the US. As hockey began to spread, the NHL was founded.
